What is the best season for a hot air balloon flight in Marrakech?
The honest answer is that Marrakech is one of the rare places in the world where hot air balloons fly nearly all year round. But each season offers something different, and knowing what to expect helps you choose the flight that matches the Morocco you're dreaming of.
Autumn (September to November) — the connoisseur's choice. After the summer heat breaks, the air becomes stable and clear. Morning temperatures at the launch site sit around 15–20°C, the light is golden, and the Atlas Mountains reappear on the horizon after the summer haze. Flights are rarely cancelled, and the tourist crowds of spring haven't yet arrived. If you want the highest probability of a perfect flight, this is it.
Winter (December to February) — the most dramatic views. This is our favorite secret. Winter mornings are cold — expect 5–10°C before sunrise, so bring a warm jacket and a hat — but the reward is extraordinary: snow-capped Atlas peaks glowing pink at first light, and visibility that can stretch for a hundred kilometers. The burner keeps the basket comfortable once you're airborne. Wind cancellations are slightly more frequent in winter, which is why we always recommend booking your flight for the first or second day of your stay, leaving room to rebook if the weather intervenes.
Spring (March to May) — the classic. Mild mornings, wildflowers in the palm groves, and long stable weather windows make spring the most popular season. It's also when Marrakech is busiest, so book your balloon at least a week ahead — sunrise baskets fill up fast, especially around April holidays.
Summer (June to August) — earlier, hotter, quieter. Balloons still fly in summer, but everything shifts earlier: pickups can be as early as 4:30 AM so the flight lands before the heat builds. The upside is availability and softer prices; the trade-off is hazier horizons and a hot return drive. If you're visiting in summer, the flight is still magical — just hydrate, dress light, and embrace the early alarm.
Three booking tips whatever the season. First, always book for early in your trip, never your last morning — weather rebooking needs a spare day. Second, sunrise is not a marketing gimmick: dawn is when the air is calmest and the light is best, which is why virtually all Marrakech flights happen then.
